This is the story of a homeopath who describes one of his unforgettable incidents to his friends.
The doctor had been staying in an old room in a village. His earnings were very less. So he stayed in that old rented room. The house was not electrified. The room was full of rats.
On a hot summer night, the doctor had his meal at the restaurant and returned to his room. When he opened the room he heard the noise of rats from above. One could say that he and the rats shared the room. He lighted the kerosene lamp on the table. He took off his dresses and opened the windows.
He laid down. But he could not sleep. He got up and spent some time at the veranda to get some air. But as there was no wind he went back into the room and sat on a chair. He took out a book The Materia Medica from a box and opened it at the table. On the table, there was a lamp and a large mirror. There was also a small comb beside the mirror.
As the doctor was a great admirer of beauty he looked into the mirror. He started to comb his hair. He was unmarried and was a doctor. He felt he had to make his presence felt. By looking into the mirror he made some important decisions. He decided to shave daily and to grow a thin moustache to look more handsome. He also decided to keep his attractive smile always on his face. He also decided to get married to a rich woman doctor with good medical practice. He thought it is better to marry a fatty woman. He needed to run away if he made some silly mistakes. She should not be able to run after him and catch him. While the doctor was thinking all these he repeatedly heard the noise from above.
Suddenly a fat snake fell down and it landed on the shoulder of the doctor. The doctor could not do anything. The snake coiled around his left arm above the elbow. The hood was spread. Because of fear, the doctor was turned to a stone. He believed that God would save him.
The doctor considered himself a foolish doctor as he had no medicines for snake bites. The snake turned its head and looked into the mirror and saw its reflection. The doctor thought whether the snake was admiring its beauty. He also thought whether the snake was trying to make an important decision about growing a moustache or using eye shadow or wearing a vermillion spot on its forehead.
The doctor was unaware of the sex of the snake. The snake uncoiled itself from his arm and crept onto the table moved towards the mirror. The doctor thought that the snake wanted to enjoy its reflection at closer quarters.
The doctor got up from the chair and ran away. He reached a friend's house. He smeared oil all over himself and took a bath. The next morning the doctor reached his own room with his friend and some other people to move his things from there. But the room had been cleaned out by a thief except his dirty vest
