● Blue vitriol in water is acidic because-
- Molecular formula for blue vitriol = CuSO4.5H20
- When CuSO4 dissolves in water, it forms aqueous soln of strong acid(H2SO4) and weak base(Cu(OH)2).
CuSO4 + 2H2O ---> Cu(OH)2 + H2SO4
- Cu(OH)3 remains in equilibrium but H2SO4 fully ionises to give lot of H+ ions.
H2SO4 ---> H+ + HSO4-
- Thus resultant solution is more acidic than basic.
