Shams-ud-Din 'iltutmish' was the 'son-in-law' of Qutubuddin aibak. Iltutmish belonged to the illabari tribe of the Turks.

He was initially a 'slave of Aibak' who later became a close general as well as his successor.  

'Iltutmish' succeeded Aibak as the next sultan of Delhi in 1211, as he managed to dispose Aram shah and then acceded to the throne of the sultanate.
