The speeds of sound in air and sea - water are given to be 340 m/s and 1440 m/s respectively. A ship sends a strong signal straight down and detects its echo after 1.5 sec. The depth of the sea at that point is?

Answer:

Speed of sound in water = 1440m per second

Time = 1.5s

Distance = 2 x depth. eq.1

let depth be 'd'

Speed = Distance/time

1440 = Distance/1.5

1440 x 1.5 = Distance

2160 m = Distance

Distance = 2 x depth from eq.1

2160 = 2 x depth

Depth = 2160/2

Depth = 1080m
