The square of a number is 8 more than the double of that number, what is the number?

 {x}^{2}  = 8 + 2x \\  {x}^{2}  - 2x - 8 = 0 \\  {x}^{2}  - 4x + 2x - 8 = 0 \\ x(x - 4) + 2(x - 4)  = 0\\ (x + 2)(x - 4) = 0 \\  \\ x = 4 \: and \:  - 2

the number is 4.
