In p block elements, it is observed that the elements show two oxidation states which differ from each other by 2 , This is because of the Inert Pair effect. The reluctance of “n S” electrons to take part in bonding is called Inert Pair effect.
As we move down any group, the Inert Pair effect gradually increases ,thereby making lower oxidation states more and more stable.
