Yes, you are right, the stem is used for support. 

However, the main function of a stem is to provide water and minerals to the plant for photosynthesis. This takes place when the roots such up the water. The xylem in the phloem carries it up.

However, in this case, the stem is underground, but still it is a stem.

Stem is made of dead lignin, hence, I do not see it reproducing asexually. It also can not even make its own food as photosynthesis takes place only when their is chlorophyll, and stem does not contain it.

However, there are modified stems that can grow underground, carry asexual reproduction or vegetative reproduction, and store food.

I believe this modified stem you are talking about is stem tuber.

Potatoes for example are stem tubers.
