The stomach of a ruminant is divided into four chambers. As soon as the ruminant swallows the food, it enters the first chamber called rumen where it gets partially digested (converted to cud). From here, the food enters the second chamber from where it again reaches the mouth for rumination, which is thorough chewing. Explanation:

When a Ruminant eats, the food enters the first stomach which is the Rumen. Here, micro organisms are help to break down the food material. Next, it enters the second stomach, the Reticulum. In this stomach, the food is either sent to the third stomach, Omasum, or is sent to the mouth for more chewing. After the food is chewed again, it enters the fourth stomach, the Abomasum.

Water is absorbed in the Omasum and digestive juices are secreted in the Abomasum.

Thus, Abomasum is the real stomach of a Ruminant where digestion of food takes place.
