While people of the village were busy gathering their belongings and fleeing from attack by enemy soldiers, the old man in all his wisdom, thinks of the poor animals of the village, that had been left in his care and which have now been left behind. It weighs him down with sadness and he gives up all hope of surviving, as he sits down by the bridge. Perhaps the thought of why an old man like him, was asked to stay behind and take care of the animals, while everyone else tried to escape, saddened him more.
This thought-provoking short story is written by Ernest Hemingway (1899 – 1961).
