question :The students in three classes are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5 If 40 students are increased in each class the ratio changes to 4 : 5 : 7 Originally the total number of students was

to find : total number of students in original

solution :

let the number of students in three classes be 2x , 3x, 5x respectively

and increased students are 4x , 5x, 7x respectively

due to increase of 40 students in each class we have ,

\frac{2x+40}{3x+40}= \frac{4}{5}\\\\10x+200=12x+160\\\\2x=200-160\\\\2x=40\\\\x=20

thus the value of x = 20

now , original strength of the students

= 10x

= 10× 20

= 200

hence , original number of students is 200 students
