Given that,

x + y + z = 23 years. (eq.1)

x = (z - 3) years. (eq.2)

z = (4 + y) years. (eq.3)

From eq. 1 and 2

(z - 3) + y + z = 23

z - 3 + y + z = 23

y + 2z = 23 + 3

y + 2z = 26

From equation 3

y + 2z = 26

y + 2(4 + y) = 26

y + 8 + 2y = 26

3y = 18

y = 6 years

Putting y = 6 in eq. 3

z = (4 + y)

z = (4 + 6)

z = 10 years

Putting z = 10 in eq. 2

x = (z - 3)

x = (10 - 3)

x = 7 years
