Answer:

let age of son be x and father y

atq, x+y=45 ⇒x=45-y  (1)

5 years ago

x-5)(y-5)=124

(45-y-5)(y-5)=124  (from 1)

40-y)(y-5)=124

40y-200-y²+5y=124

45y-y²-200=124

y²-45y+324=0

y²-9y-36y+324=0

y(y-9)-36(y-9)=0

(y-36)(y-9)=0

y=36 or y=9

since age of son cannot be greater than age of father, y≠9

in eq 1, x=45-y= 45-36= 9
