Let, the ages of p and q be x and y

According to the 1st condition,

x + y = 42.........(i)

According to the given 2nd condition,

3 yes back the ages of p and q will be (x-3) and (y-3)

(x-3) = 5(y-3)

x-3 = 5y - 15

x - 5y = - 15+3

x-5y = - 12......(ii)

Multiply eqn (i) by 5

5x + 5y = 210.....(iii)

Add eqn (ii) and (iii)

6x = 198

x = 198/6

x = 33

Put x = 33 in eqn (i)

x + y = 42

33+ y = 42

y = 42-33

y = 29

Thus,

Difference between the ages of p and q:

x = 33

y = 29

33>29

x-y =33-29

x-y=4

Answer:

The difference between the ages of p and q is 4yrs
