So we would subtract 6 from the ages of both.  Then let Anil's age be= x And the age of Anil's father= 6x According to the question x + 6x = 42  7x = 42 x = 42/7 x = 6 So Anil's age = x = 6 years Age of Anil's father = 6x = 36 years And hence, their present ages would be: Anil = 6+6        = 12 years Anil's father = 36+6                      = 42 years
