Solution:

Let the present age of Shelly = x years

age of Shelly's mother = y years

four year back both are 4 year younger ie

Shelly's age (x-4) year

mother's age (y-4) year

$y - 4 = 4(x - 4) \\ \\ y - 4 = 4x - 16 \\ \\ - 4x + y = -16 + 4 \\ \\ 4x - y = 12 \: \: \: \: \: \: eq2$
add both equations 1 and 2

$5x = 75 \\ \\ x = \frac{75}{5} \\ \\ x= 15$
so

$y = 63 - 15 \\ \\ y = 48$
present age of Shelly is 15 years

her mother is 48 years
