let the son's present age be x years
his father 's present age be 45-x years
1) Son = X

Father = 45 - X

5years ago Son = ( X -5)

Father = 45 - X - 5 = ( 40 - X)

( X -5) ( 40- X ) = 4 ( 40 - X)

X- 5 = 4
X = 9

ANSWER Son 9 years Father = 36

CHECK
5 years ago product of ages 4 X 31 = 124

4 X fathers age 4 X 31 = 124

Let the present age of the father be x years.

Then, the present age of the son = (45-x) years

Age of the father 5 years ago = (x-5) years

Age of son 5 years ago = (45-x-5) years = (40-x) years

(x-5)(40-x)=124

-x^2+ 45x -200= 124
x^2-45x+324=0
x^2-36x-9x+324=0
X(x-36)-9(x-36)=0
(x-36)(x-9)=0
x-36=0 or x-9=0
x= 36 or x=9

But ,the father's age cannot be 9 years.So ,we reject x= 9
Hence, the father' s present age = 36 years
And, the son's present age = (45-36) years
= 9 years
