the sum of the ages of two friends is 20 years. Four years ago, the product of their ages in years was 48. Is the situation possible? If so, determine their present ages.
Please solve fast. it's very urgent. I want the question to be as a solution not a statement.

Step-by-step explanation:

let ages of both are x and y respectively

then by all statement We get

x + y = 20

y = (20 - x) .....(i)

and

( x - 4 )( y - 4 ) = 48 .......(ii)

put value of y in equation (ii) from equation (i)

( x - 4 )(20 - x - 4 ) = 48

(x - 4)(16 - x) = 48

16x -  {x}^{2}  - 64  + 4x = 48

 {x}^{2}  - 20x + 112 = 0

this equation is not soluble

and value of x is imaginary

which is not possible

Therefore this satuation is not possible
