The sum of the denominator and numerator of a fraction is 40. If 1 is added to both the
numerator and the denominator, the fraction becomes 3/4. Find the fraction

n+d=40

d=40-n

and

 \frac{n + 1}{d + 1}  =  \frac{3}{4}

on cross multiplication

4n+4=3d+3

4n+4=3(40-n)+3

4n+4-3=120-3n

4n+1=120-3n

4n+3n=120-1

7n=119

n=119/7

n=17

so

d=40-n

d=40-17

d=23

so the fraction is

 \frac{17}{23}
