Here is your answer :-

Let the smaller number be 2x +1 and the consecutive number be 2x + 3

By given condition,

2x +1+2x+3 = 36

4x + 4 = 36

4x = 36-4

4x = 32

x = 32/4

x = 8

So, smallest number is 2x+1 = 2 (8)+1 = 16+1 = 17

Please nnote that's we can also take the number as x, But, in order to ensure that the number is odd, it is necessary to take 2x + 1.

2x will definitely be even. So, 2x +1 will always be odd number.
