X+y = 20
x-y = 4
add the two equation and get
2y = 24
x= 24/2= 12
plug x= 12 into either equation and get
y= 8

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the two numbers be a and b.

Analyzing the question we have :

a - b = 4...... 1)

a + b = 20...........2)

These are simultaneous equations.

We solve them simultaneously.

Let's get the value of a from b.

a = 4 + b

Now substitute the value of a in equation 2.

(4 + b) + b = 20

4 + 2b = 20

2b = 20 - 4

2b = 16

b = 8

Plunge b in 1 we have :

a - 8 = 4

a = 4 + 8

a = 12
