The sum of two number is 110.One fifth of the largest number is 8 more than one ninths of the smaller number. Find the number

Solution : -

Let the two numbers be x and y

x + y = 110

x = 110 - y ------------(1)

x/5 - 8 = y/9

x/5 - y/9 = 8

(9x - 5y) / 45 = 8

9x - 5y = 360 --------(2)

Putting 1 in 2

9 (110 - y) - 5y = 360

990 - 9y - 5y = 360

14y = 630

y = 630/14

y = 45

Putting the value of y in 1

x = 110 - 45

x = 65

Hence we got x as 65 and y as 45.
