Given -

  • Sum of two numbers = 40
  • Difference of two numbers = 14

To find -

  • The numbers.

Solution -

Firstly,

  • Let the first number be x.
  • Let the second number be y.

According to the question

⇢ Sum of numbers = 40

⇢ x + y = 40⠀⠀...[1]

⇢ Difference of numbers = 14

⇢ x - y = 14⠀⠀...[2]

Subtracting [2] from [1]

➝ (x + y) - (x - y) = 40 - 14

➝ x + y - x + y = 26

➝ x - x + y + y = 26

➝ 2y = 26

➝ y = 13

Putting the value of y in [1]

➝ x + 13 = 40

➝ x = 40 - 13

➝ x = 27

Hence,

  • First number = x = 27
  • Second number = y = 13
