Answer: The greater number is 40 and the smaller number is 32

Step-by-step

Let the greater number be x and smaller number be y

According to the first condition,

x + y =72

Let this be equation number 1

According to the second condition,

3x - 2y = 56

Let this be equation number 2

Now

Multiplying equation 1 by 2 , we get ,

2x + 2y = 144

Let this be equation number 3

Now, adding equation 2 and 3 , we get,,

    2x + 2y = 144

+  3x -  2y  = 56

      5x +0   =  200

          x = 200

                   5

   x = 40

substituting the value of x in equation 1

40 + y = 72

y = 72 - 40

y = 32

Hence ,

the greater number is 40 and the smaller number is 32
