Let, the numbers be x and y. Then,
x+y = 16 ...(i)
x-y = 2 ...(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii),
x+y+x-y = 16+2
=> 2x = 18
=> x = 9
When x = 9,
y = 16-9 [From (i)]
=> y = 7.
Therefore, the values of x and y are 9 and 7 respectively.
