The sum of two numbers is 24,900. If 6.5%
of one number is equal to 8.5% of the other

sum of two nos is 24900

this gives us

x+y =24900

And 6.5 % of one no is equals to 8.5 % of other

.065x = .085 y

now we have a system of two eqns in two variables

x+y =24900......1

.065x = .085 y

to make things easier we multiply both side by 1000 we get

65x = 85 y.......2

from eqn 1 we can write by substitution method

x= 24900 -y

substituting this expression in eq 2 we get

65(24900 -y) = 85y

now we can calculate the value of y

1618500 -65y = 85y

taking -65y to other side we get

1618500 = 150 y

dividing by 150

y= 10790

now we are almost done but we have to find x too

x+y =24900

x+10790= 24900

x= 14110

so the two nos are 14110 and 10790
