Hii frnd...
Let the numbers be x and y.
so,
x+y=40
and the second statement says that,
x=3y
So, putting the value of x in eq1
3y+y=40
4y=40
y=10
One number is 10 so another would be 30(from x=3y)
Hope it helped u!!!

Given,
The sum of two numbers = 40
The greater number is thrice the smaller number.
To find,
The two numbers.
Solution,
We can simply solve this mathematical problem using the following process:
Let us assume that the smaller number is x.
Now, according to the question;
The larger number = thrice the smaller number
= 3 × smaller number
= 3x
Now, according to the question;
The sum of two numbers = 40
=> smaller number + larger number = 40
=> x + 3x = 40
=> 4x = 40
=> x = 40/4
=> x = 10
=> smaller number = 10
So, the larger number = 3x = 3×10 = 30
Hence, the two numbers are 10 and 30, respectively.
