GIVEN

The sum of two numbers is 40 and their difference is 2.

TO FIND

Find the two numbers.

SOLUTION

Let the first number be x and second number be y

According to the given condition

✪ Sum of two numbers = 40

→ (x + y) = 40 ---(i)

✪ Difference of two numbers = 2

→ (x - y) = 2 ----(ii)

Add both the equations

→ (x + y)+(x - y) = 40 + 2

→ x + y + x - y = 42

→ 2x = 42

→ x = 42/2 = 21

Putting the value of x in equation (ii)

x - y = 2

→ 21 - y = 2

→ y = 21 - 2 = 19

Hence

First number = x = 21

Or

Second number = y = 19
