Answer:

let first number be x

so second number is 42 - x

according to statement

5x - 9(42 - x) = 190

5x - 378 + 9x = 190

14x = 568

Answer :- First number is 47 and second number is - 5.

Step by step explanation :-

Let the first number be x and second number be y.

Then according to question,

x+y=42 ...... (1)

5x+9y=190 .......(2)

On multiplying the first equation by 5, we get,

5x+5y=210 .......(3)

Now subtracting equation 2 from equation3, we get,

(5x+5y) - (5x+9y) = 210-190

5x + 5y - 5x - 9y = 20

5y - 9y = 20

-4y =20

4y = -20

y = -20

4

y = - 5

Put the value of y in equation1, we get,

x + (-5) = 42

x - 5 = 42

x = 42 + 5

x = 47
