Let one of the number be x.

and the another number be y.

According to the question,

                       x + y = 8     -(1)

and                  x - y = 4     -(2)

By adding equation (1) and (2), we get;

          x + y = 8

           x - y = 4

        +

            2x = 12

⇒ 2x = 12

⇒ x = \dfrac{12}{2}

⇒ x = 6

By substituting the value of x in equation (2), we get;

x - y = 4

⇒  6 - y = 4

⇒ - y = 4 - 6

⇒ - y = - 2

⇒ y = 2

Therefore, the two numbers are 6 and 2.
