Let the 1st number be x

Given, 2nd number exceeds the 1st number be 25 = x + 25

Given, their sum = 85


According to the question,

x + x + 25 = 85

➾ 2x + 25 = 85

➾ 2x = 85 - 25

➾ 2x = 60

➾ x = \dfrac{60}{2}

➾ x = 30



1st number is x

\underline{30}


2nd number is x + 25

➾ 30 + 25

\underline{55}




∴ The numbers are 30 and 55



Verification :-

x + x + 25 = 85

➾ 30 + 30 + 25 = 85

➾ 60 + 25 = 85

➾ 85 = 85

∴ LHS = RHS ✔✔

The sum of two numbers is 85, if one number exceeds the other by 25 we have to find number .


Let the first number be x and second be x + 25

According to question;
Thier sum is 85.

Equation according to question;
x +( x + 25) = 85
➡ x + x + 25 = 85
➡ 2x = 85-25
➡ 2x = 60
➡ x = 60÷2
➡ x = 30

First number is = x = 30
Second number = x + 25 = 30 + 25 = 55
