The sum of two opposite number is 0

Given :

Two opposite number

To find :

The sum of two opposite number

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Define opposite numbers

For any given number the opposite number of the number is the additive inverse of the number

We know that 0 is the additive identity

Let N be any number and M be the additive inverse of N

So by the property of additive inverse

N + M = 0 = M + N

Now N + M = 0 gives M = - N

More precisely for any given number the additive inverse is the number that when added to the given number will result zero

So from above we can conclude that additive inverse of N is - N

Therefore opposite number of N is - N

Step 2 of 2 :

Find sum of two opposite number

Let us consider the number N

Then opposite number of N is - N

So the sum

= N + ( - N )

= N - N

= 0

Hence sum of two opposite number is 0
