Given :–

  • Sum of two rational numbers = –2.
  • If one of the number is  \dfrac{-14}{5}

To Find :–

  • The other number.

Solution :–

Let,

The other number be x.

According to the question,

Sum of two numbers = –2

i.e. One number + Other number = –2

  • One number =  \dfrac{-14}{5}
  • Other number = x

 \dfrac{-14}{5} + x = –2

⟹ x = –2 –  \dfrac{-14}{5}

⟹ x =  \dfrac{-2}{1}  \dfrac{-14}{5}

Now, take the L.C.M. of the denominators (1 and 5),

L.C.M. of (1 and 5) = 5.

⟹ x =  \dfrac{(-10) - (-14)}{5}

⟹ x =  \dfrac{-10 + 14}{5}

⟹ x =  \dfrac{4}{5}

Hence,

The other number is  \dfrac{4}{5}

Check :–

  • One number =  \dfrac{-14}{5}
  • Other number =  \dfrac{4}{5}

So,

⟹ One number + Other number = –2

 \dfrac{-14}{5} +  \dfrac{4}{5} = –2

Now, take the L.C.M. of the denominators (5 and 5),

L.C.M. of 5 and 5 = 5

 \dfrac{-14+4}{5} = –2

 \dfrac{\cancel{-10}}{\cancel5} = –2

⟹ –2 = –2

Hence, the L.H.S. and the R.H.S. are equal.

So, the answer is correct, the other number is  \dfrac{4}{5}
