Other number =

 - 1 \frac{1}{8}

GIVEN:- Sum of two rational number is -7/12; one of them is 13/24

TO FIND:- other number

SOLUTION:-

  • The Sum of two rational numbers means the addition of a rational number to another rational number.

Let the other rational number be x

x +  \frac{13}{24}  =  \frac{ - 7}{12}  \\

Shifting from one side to another changes the signs

x =  \frac{ - 7}{12}  -  \frac{13}{24}  \\

By taking LCM to make the denominators equal

x =  \frac{ - 7 \times 2}{12 \times 2}  -  \frac{13 \times 1}{24 \times 1}  \\ x =  \frac{ - 14}{24}  -  \frac{13}{24}  \\ x =  \frac{ - 14 - 13}{24}  \\ x =  -  \frac{27}{24}  \\   x = -  1 \frac{3}{24}  \\ x =  - 1  \frac{1}{8}

Hence other number =  - 1 \frac{1}{8}
