The present ages of Wendy and Clyde are 50 and 14 respectively.

Given:

the sum of ages of Wendy and Clyde = 64 years

Wendy's age in 4 years = 3 times Clyde's age

To Find:

the present ages of Wendy and Clyde

Solution:

let the present ages of Wendy and Clyde be x and y

⇒ x + y = 64

x = 64 - y ...(1)

Wendy and Clyde's ages in 4 years will be (x + 4) and (y + 4) respectively.

⇒ (x + 4) = 3(y + 4)

x + 4 = 3y + 12

x = 3y + 8 ...(2)

equating (1) and (2), we get-

64 - y = 3y + 8

4y = 56

y = 14

⇒ x = 64 - 14 = 50

Thus, the present ages of Wendy and Clyde are 50 and 14 respectively.
