According to the question,

The greater number is 8 more than the smaller number.

Let the smaller number be x

So, the greater number is (x+8)

⇒ x + (x+8) = 60

⇒ 2x + 8 = 60

⇒ 2x = 60 - 8     [ transporting 8 to LHS ]

⇒ 2x = 52

⇒ x = 52 ÷ 2

⇒ x = 26

Hence,

The smaller number is 26

and the greater number is = (x+8) = 26 + 8 = 34
