Summary of the Clay Mother-in-law

The Clay Mother-in-law is a renowned folk tale of South India. It was retold in English by the great Tamil Scholar and poet- A.K. Ramanujan.

In a village lived a docile and loyal house wife. She was ever submissive to her aged mother-in-law and sought her advice in all household chores which included the measure of rice she was to boil every day. The mother-in-law gave her the instructions and measurements according to her whims.

One day the old lady died. The good wife was heart-broken and pestered her husband to give her the measures of rice. Irritated, he got the potter to build a life like statue of his mother with her fingers pointing two and three as signs of measurement. The wife was happy and cooked rice according the clay fist she first saw. She served the first helping to the statue.

The neighbours were a cunning lot. They saw the offerings and stole the food every day. The wives’ husband was furious with the unaccountability of the food consumption and suspected his wife of foul play. He threw her out with the clay idol.

In the jungle the wife took refuge on the branches of a tree. At night a gang of robbers came with their load of loot. The wife was so scared that she dropped the idol which broke on them into three pieces scaring them out of their wits. Collecting the loot and the broken pieces the wife returned home and related the incidents. Her husband was happy with the wealth she had accrued. But her greedy neighbours got a smell of it and the neighbour’s wife took a clay idol and went to the forest.

When she dropped the idol purposefully on the robbers the gang got suspicious and captured her. They tied her to the tree and beat her black and blue. Thus the greedy neighbours failed at their plan and to pay heavily for their greed.
