The surface of copper metal acquires a green coating, when it is exposed to air, but on heating the metal, it acquires a black coating.

Explanation:

  • Generally, the copper metal, whenever exposed to open air would convert into green colour. This is because it is corrosive in nature.
  • These copper vessels, exposing to open air during the rainy season, or exposing to moist air would have reaction with some gases and these gases would form a mixtures of copper hydroxide and copper carbonate.
  • This is the reason of green colour. Then the colour of the heated copper becomes black when this air got passed over due to the oxygen reaction to form copper oxide. This is the reason of black colour.
