Symbols of elements are determined from usually the initial letter of the word of the element. Here Cobalt has the first letter as C. But is also the first letter for Carbon, Chromium. Hence only C cannot be the symbol. Hence the letter next to is taken, and that becomes Co. CO is not the symbol for cobalt as O is the symbol for oxygen, and C is for Carbon, and CO represents the compound carbon monoxide
