The Chola Empire was divided into nine provinces, called “Mandalams” which was further divided into a number of districts, or zillas, known as “Valanadus”. Each Valanadu was divided into a number of villages, called Nadus. Larger towns were known as Taniyurs

The Cholas set up a highly efficient system of administration.

Princes were appointed as governors of Mandalams.

The Chola had organized a powerful army both to extend and defend its borders. In addition to Yuvaraja and General, the King led the military in the time of war. The Empire of Chola was broken up into the six Mandalam provinces. Each mandalam was divided into Kottams or Valanadu or districts.
