The taxi fare in a city is as follows, for the first kilometre, the fare is Rs 8 and for the subsequent distance is Rs 5 per km, taking the distance covered as 'x' km and total fare as Rs 'y', write a linear equation for the information and using the information and using the equation find :-

(a) the fare for distance of 15 kilometres.
(b) the distance for which total fare is Rs 63.

I km = Rs.8
Subsequent km = Rs. 5
Distance covered = x
Total fare = y
1. Y= 8 +( 15 - 1 ) × 5
2. X = 63 - 8 / 5

Ans. From the given situation, we can conclude that the distance covered at the rate Rs 5 per
km will be(x-1), as first kilometer is charged at Rs 8 per km.

We can conclude that the linear equation for the given situation will be:

8+5(x-1)=y
=> 8+5x-5=y
=> 3+5x=y

(a) We have to find the the fare for distance 15 km. So we put 15 on the equation in the place of 'x', then

3+5(15)=y
=> 3+75=y
=> y=78

Clearly the fare for 15 kilometre is Rs 78.

(b) We have to find the distance for which total fare is Rs 63. So we put 63 on the equation in the place of 'y', then

3+5x=63
=> 5x=63-3
=> x=60/5 = 12

Clearly the distance for which total fare is Rs 63 is 12 kilometres.
