Indirect/Reported Speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: Kaitlyn said,"I love gardening." (Direct)

Kaitlyn said that she loves gardening. (Indirect/Reported)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day', 'can' changes to 'could', 'you' changes to 'I', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day' and many other words will have to be made.

The teacher said to the boy, "What are you reading?" (Direct)

The teacher asked the boy what he was reading. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
