SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • The temperature in Raleigh is 75 degrees and over the next 12 hours, the temperature rises by 2 degrees each hour.

  • The temperature in Charlotte is 82 degrees and rises by 1 degree every hour over the next 12 hours.

TO DETERMINE

The time ( hour) when they have be the same temperature

EVALUATION

Let after t hours Raleigh and Charlotte will have the same temperature

Now the temperature in Raleigh is 75 degrees and over the next 12 hours, the temperature rises by 2 degrees each hour.

So after t hours temperature of Raleigh will be

= 75 + 2t degrees

Again the temperature in Charlotte is 82 degrees and rises by 1 degree every hour over the next 12 hours

So after t hours temperature of Charlotte will be

= 82 + t degrees

So by the given condition

75 + 2t = 82 + t

 \sf{ \implies \: 2t - t = 82 - 75}

 \sf{ \implies \: t  = 7}

So after 7 hours Raleigh and Charlotte will have the same temperature ( 89 degrees )
