The temperature of water is never 100 degree celcius in lakes or rivers or seas. How then does it change into vapours? Why aren't the lower layers hot? (Class 9 Chemistry Question)

I think it's due to latent heat that the upper layer gets evaporated whereas the lower layers remain cooler.
