The spirit has the property of absorbing heat very fast. It even has a very less boiling point ,the spirit absorbs heat quickly and evaporates even at normal temperature ,the object on which it had been applied gets cooled according to the energy conservation law and as it has evaporated away, it leaves the object cooler.thus the mercury falls down in the thermometer when its bulb is wrapped in a spirit soaked cloth.
