the temperature t on a thermometric scale is defined in terms of of a property k by the relation t=a ink+b,where a and b are constant.The values of k are found to be 2.83 and 8.78 ice point and steam point,the temperature of which are assigned the number 0 and 100. Determine the temperature corresponding to a reading of k equal to 5.12 on the thermometer.

Given

The values of K 2.83 and 8.78 ice point and steam point

To find

The temperature corresponding to a reading of K equal to 5.12 on the thermometer

Solution

We know that,

t = a ln k +b

at t=0,

0=a ln 2.83 +b                . . . . . ( 1 )

at 100,

100= a ln 8.78 + b            . . . . .( 2 )

from equation (1) and (2)

a=88.33

b=-91.87

At,

k=5.12

t = a ln k +b

t = 88.33 ln 5.12 -91.87

t = 52.38°C

Hence, the temperature corresponding to a reading is 52.38°C
