The temperature T1 and T2 of two heat reserviour in an ideal carnot engine are 1500°C and 500°C. We can use, Efficiency = 1 – T2/T1 = (T1-T2) / T1. Increasing the temperature T1 by 100°C, E = (1600 – 500 ) / (1600 + 273) = 59%. Decreasing T2 by 100°C, E = 1500 – (500 – 100) / (1500 +273) = 67%. Hence the decreasing T2 by 100°C can result in greater improvement in efficiency.
