The ‘Diggers’, a group of agrarian communists in England during 1649, was led by Gerrard Winstanley (1609 - 1676) , a Protestant religious reformer, political philosopher and activist.

They were initially known as ‘True levellers’ but later on, came to be known as ‘Diggers’ because they tried to farm on common land, in defiance. Ideas of the ‘Diggers’ were based on agrarian lifestyle and egalitarian society.

The term Digger is associated with a group of agrarian communists who flourished in England in 1649 were led by  Gerrad Winstanley and William Everard.

These diggers assembled at St. George's Hill, surrey and began to cultivate common land. These diggers demanded that the common land should be made available to them to cultivate. But they faced very hostility from the government and the landlords.
