The term rock refers to the material that forms the crust of the Earth. It includes hard
materials like sandstone, marble and granite as well as loose and softer materials such as sand,
clay, mud or chalk. Since rocks are composed of one or more minerals, they do not have a
definite chemical composition. The landform, drainage and soil of an area is determined by the
type
of rocks found in that area certain rocks contain metals which can be extracted
economically. These rocks are called Ores. For example : Bauxite is an ore of aluminium.
Haematite is an ore of iron, on the basis of their origin rocks can be classified into three main
types: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.
