Answer:

The theme of the story, is that "what goes around comes around". It means, that karma is truly real, and you always have to pay a price for what deeds you have done. In this case, DR. Grimsby Roylott attempts to assassinate his step-daughter Helen Stoner, with a venomous snake, just like he had murdered his other daughter, Julia. His motive, was, like always, money. He had tried to ruthelessly and barbarically kill her, but Sherlock Holmes interrupted his terrible cause, and in an attempt of mere self defense, killed Dr. Grimsby Roylott. Who met his death in poetic Justice.

Explanation:

This is reference taken from the saying "the schemer falls into the pit which he digs for another", meaning, when you try to dig a pit (a cause of someone else's fall), then nevertheless, it's natures law, that evil must not go on for long. The sinister plan of the schemer, would miserably fail, and he would be the one, to perish in the dark pit.
