Britain had carried out many tentative efforts for the expansion in India under various Governor Generals.

  • The British Government by Diwani's right, got the power to collect enormous amounts of land revenue from Bihar, Bengal, Bihar Orissa. They wanted to establish infrastructure to extend British hegemony in India.  
  • Lord Wellesley introduced the Subsidiary Alliance method, under which the ruler of the allying Indian state was compelled to reluctantly accept a British force 's permanent stationing within its area and also provide a subsidy for its maintenance.
  • He also introduced War Annexation to extend British territories.
  • Lord Dalhousie also adopted three concepts to expand British in India, namely, the Doctrine of Lapse, the War of Conquest, and a misgovernment occupation.
